Environmental and social responsibilty

AP3 believes there is a link between a company’s ethical standards and its ability to deliver long-term shareholder value. We therefore work to ensure that company managements identify and manage social and environmental risks so as to create shareholder value.

We use two methods to implement environmental and social responsibility in our business. The first seeks to ensure that we meet domestic and international legal requirements relating to our state-owned status. The second involves playing an active governance role to ensure that the companies in which we hold a significant equity interest have in place policies and procedures for managing environmental and social risks.

AP3’s social and ethical requirements
AP3’s social and ethical standards are based on international conventions signed by Sweden. The following agreements are especially important:

  • The OECD’s guidelines for multinational corporations.
  • The ILO’s core conventions (relating to forced labour, child labour, working conditions, equality and freedom of association)
  • The UN Declaration on Human Rights.

Exclusions
AP3 believes that dialogues is the best way to promote change in a company. We have a systematic approach from screening to dialogue including collaboration with other investors. This systematic process is the described in the Ethical Councils annual report. As a last resort when our requests for action do not yield result we will exclude the company from our portfolio.
