AP3 and AP4 complete modernization of system infrastructure

The Third and Fourth Swedish National Pension Funds (AP3 and AP4) have completed a comprehensive modernization of their system infrastructure through a new, integrated front-to-back solution. This replaces multiple systems that support the entire workflow — from analysis and order placement to portfolio management, risk, performance, compliance, and financial reporting. The new system provides a future-proof foundation for the funds’ business and processes.

Staffan Hansén and Niklas Ekvall, CEOs of AP3 and AP4, comment:
“The implementation of this modernized platform was preceded by extensive preparations. Through collaboration between the funds, we have created important synergies and are now well equipped for future needs.”

Through replacing the multiple systems with one modern, cloud-based and integrated solution, the funds have obtained flexible and efficient support that will strengthen the business processes and increase operational efficiency.

The platform enables the entire investment management process in an integrated way. It also creates excellent conditions for continued close collaboration and joint development between the funds.

Eva Boric, CFO/CRO AP3, and Nicklas Wikström, Head of Risk and Operational Support AP4, say:
“AP3 and AP4 have been able to leverage each other’s experience and expertise, which has strengthened our ability to meet future requirements and challenges.”

The transition to the new system platform has been carried out in collaboration with system provider SimCorp as well as Clara Consulting, Northern Trust, and JP Morgan.

AP3 and AP4 are buffer funds within the Swedish national pension system. As of June 30, 2025, the funds managed approximately SEK 1,108 billion in total.

The funds have a mandate from the Swedish Parliament to manage the fund capital to the greatest possible benefit for the pension system by generating high returns at a low level of risk in a responsible manner. The goal is for today and tomorrow’s retirees to benefit from AP funds contributing to a robust pension system.
